Peter Rees – tenth overall and top Welshman in CIK European Kart Championship Finals and off to the World Championship in Italy

Welshman Peter Rees (18), travelled to Corridonia in Italy to represent Britain at the CIK European Championship Finals in August.   Having sailed through the Qualifying rounds at Lyon in France finishing sixth overall, he and the Ricky Flynn Motorsport team spent a scorching weekend in Italy and returned triumphant as the top British Team and British Driver.

Technical problems in first qualifying meant that Rees had to fight his way through the field in the Qualification Races to start fifteenth on the grid in the Grand Final.   Despite scorching temperatures reaching 44 centigrade he raced through the field to finish tenth overall and top-placed British driver.

“It was fantastic” said Rees.   “The team made a mega-effort over the whole weekend and gave me a superb set-up – this is a great result”

“Peter worked really hard to get the kart just right” commented the team principal of Renault-backed Ricky Flynn Motorsport.   “He’s been concentrating on his fitness and this really showed in the temperatures we experienced here.   Now we can look forward to even greater success in the World Championships in October.”

Rees is backed by Welsh Autoparts Distribution, based in Newport.   Rees is a second-generation Welsh race driver and there is a 30-year link with his sponsors: his father, Nigel, raced throughout the seventies and eighties, winning the Welsh Speed Championship in 1978, and he was also supported by George Ford and Sons Ltd of Newport for five years.

Joe Ford, Managing Director of Welsh Autoparts Distribution Ltd said “I am really proud of Peter and this fantastic result.   He clearly has great potential.   Nigel always worked hard on our behalf, and I am very confident that Peter will do the same.   Karting is an essential stepping stone for every professional race driver, and Peter is now reaching the very top – he’s got a great future ahead of him and we are proud to support him!”

The team flies out to Sarno in Italy for the weekend of 24/25 October.
